Hydrogen fires

CTA recently built a facility for analysis of fire conditions in new zero-emission hydrogen-powered aircraft with the objective of characterising the conditions of hydrogen fires in aircraft and establishing a comparison with traditional paraffin fuel fires.

A further aim is to support the development of new regulations and guidelines for H2 fires and assist with the improvement of safety aspects of H2 aircraft firefighting, including development of flame detection systems, fire extinguishing systems and risk mitigation.

CTA also uses fire modelling and simulation tools to complement physical tests and duly support these developments.
